Inclusive Design

In this KIND wrappers design project the goal is to design accessible packaging for the visually impaired. The KIND Bar wrapper designed for this project fits within the design thematic of healthy natural foods.

About The Concept

For this particular project I am focusing specifically on the colorblind visual impairment thus, color, contrast, texture, and scale are crucial for the creation of a successful design.

The inclusion of a QR code ensures that the key information about the product and brand are accessible via multiple formats (audible, visual - enlarged). This design solution is informative to both the visually impaired and the wider audience of consumers.

The design of the information hierarchy is developed to ensure an easy read for both the visually impaired while at the same time maintaining a visual appeal to the wider consumer audience.

The typeface selected is consistent throughout the wrapper design to ensure that image-text to speech/audio apps can recognize the text easily. The selected type face is Neu Haus Grotesque, which is, in fact, one of the four most scannable typefaces for text-to-speech apps. Some apps also indicate the information hierarchy based on text weight and size (ex: speechify and other similar intelligent text-to-speech phone plugins).

The colors used to differentiate the three different KIND Bars  are proven to be the only three colors that remain the most consistently stable/same amongst people experiencing the differing variations of color blindness. Specifically, the blue and yellow colors remain unchanging for all kinds of color blindness while green will only vary in contrast a little. Thus, the wrapper designs will remain the same visually to a colorblind individual as they do to the general public.
