Art History Poster Project

This project is part of a Communications Design course directed to explore the effects of considering the needs of a specific audience.

Assignment

Design a series of “posters” with similar yet different information. Propose a new series of 11”x17” posters that introduce high school students to art and design movements. The information and images should provide a general introduction and place the design movements in a historical and social context.

Rationale

With the use of a timeline hierarchy system to organize and relate information this poster series forms a coherent visual storyline of art history movements. The timeline system is reinforced with the use of both information hierarchy and visual graphics.

The visual graphic of the blue line acts as the time ‘line’ itself creating an easy to follow timeline across the poster series. While the images used to represent the movements are different in their quantity scale and positioning creating a path-like variation within the poster series which can be expanded beyond the two posters presented. The color pallets of the posters would follow the colors that are most prominent in the artworks, architecture, designs of the specific art movement presented by the individual poster.

Overall, this poster is specifically designed to be flexible and easily adjustable to accommodate various formats of artworks within the art movements. This flexible design to the series easily presents ample variation to ensure the presence of continuous visual interest while at the same time remaining coherent and tie together as a series.
